Uzbekistan's location along the Great Silk Road, stretching from China to the Mediterranean, made it home for many ancient civilizations.
Conquered by Russia in the late 19th century, Uzbekistan became, despite fierce opposition by local population, a Soviet Republic in 1924. Part of Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) since the break-up of USSR 1991, the country joined the Hi Kidz ministry in 1996.
Currently the world's second-largest cotton exporter and fifth largest producer, Uzbekistan is a dry, landlocked country, with the majority of the population living in densely populated rural communities. Its terrain consists mostly of sandy desert with dunes, as well as broad river valleys along the course of Amu Darya, Syr Darya (Sirdaryo), and Zarafshon.
